“LOVE IS THE GREATEST GIFT HE GAVE TO US ALL.”
— Emilia Sugiyama
“Lullaby For Estevan”
Composed and performed by Zach Southall
Estevan Kane Sugiyama, a beacon of joy and exemplar of the noblest virtues, left this world unexpectedly on July 3, 2024. He was on Summer break, visiting his grandmother and spending time with this uncles in Northern Nevada, doing what he loved— fishing, working on cars in the garage, and eating his grandma’s delicious food. In the early morning of July 3rd, he was on a FaceTime group chat with his friends until 1:00 am and decided to play with a loaded pistol he found, and he accidentally shot himself. He died instantly that night.
Born on September 20, 2009, in Orange, California— Estevan’s short life was a testament to the power of positivity, the strength of character, and the profound impact one individual can make on the lives around them.
Estevan graduated from St. John’s Lutheran Middle School, where he was surrounded by a multitude of friends, and was to be an incoming freshman at Orange Lutheran High School. His infectious smile and sparkling eyes made him a magnet for joy and companionship. He had a unique way of engaging with people, looking them in the eye with a respect that spoke volumes about his upbringing and the depth of his character.
He loved to create beats in his room and repurpose old toys into new items. But it was outdoors where Estevan felt most at home, whether he was skateboarding, fishing, surfing, or simply riding his bicycle. His love for nature was matched only by his love for people. Estevan’s spirit of giving and his commitment to charitable work were evident to all who knew him. Even at a young age, his generous heart and spirit seemed almost innate, a natural extension of his very being.
Estevan loved to travel with his family, exploring new cultures and cuisines with the enthusiasm of a true foodie. His father, Darren, instilled in him the principles of the Bushido Code— righteousness, courage, benevolence, respect, honesty, honor, and loyalty. These principles were not just words to Estevan; they were a way of life. His family’s values were deeply ingrained in him, and he embraced them fully, living each day with the honor and integrity of a young samurai.
To know Estevan was to witness the embodiment of love, generosity, and thoughtfulness. He had a rare ability to inspire and uplift those around him. As Helen Keller once said, “What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” Estevan’s spirit and love have indeed become a part of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we remember Estevan, let us celebrate the extraordinary life he led and the lessons he taught us. His legacy is not one of sorrow but one of inspiration. Estevan Kane Sugiyama may have departed from this world, but his light continues to shine brightly in the hearts of those he touched. Let us honor his memory by living our lives with the same love, courage, and integrity that he exemplified every day.

Whenever Martin and I were gathering to meet with your family, the first words out of our mouth were: “I hope Estevan is there too.” Estevan would always go out of his way to make sure he said hello to Martin and I and the first thing Martin would do is look for Estevan. Even when he was very little Estevan understood people, was interested genuinely in what they were thinking and so caring. And so amazing even still, we are among your “older senior'“ friends. Our “senior” friends was no deterrence to Estevan at all. He especially like to practice his Spanish with Martin which of course, Martin adored!
Estevan is a gift and will always be treasured by us and forever in our memories.

From the moment we met Estevan, we were struck by how much of a gentleman he was and such a bright, young man. He was delightful to spend time with and always cheerful and kind. We will miss him.

Estevan would take me fishing in Broadmoor Lake. When I was 9 years old and he was 13, one day I was really hungry while fishing. Estevan put down his fishing pole and rushed off to Pacific Ranch Market to grab some BBQ ribs for me! He was so kind to me. My fishing brother.
